HUGMAP · MEET THE BUDDIES

Hello,
I’m Mimo.

Your buddy for all you want to share.

Mimo waves hello while holding a picture book.

01

I love a good song.

And a good chat, too.
But do you know what I love most?

Mimo sings happily into a microphone, keeping the beat with one wing.

Listening to you.

02

You say, “Ahh!”

“Ahh!” I say back.
Then you say, “Ooh!”
“Ooh!” I say.

Short curved sound waves beside the child’s mouth and Mimo’s beak show them taking turns making sounds.

We’re having a little chat
of our own.

03

Up go your arms.
Up go my wings!

I can do that too!
Shall we do it again?

Mimo raises both wings to copy a child raising both arms.

There we go—together!

04

Oh! Over there?

I’m listening for your voice.
But your finger is pointing up.

Mimo follows the child’s pointing finger and looks up.

I follow your finger.
Let’s take a look together.

05

Which would you like?

The book or the ball?
You point to the book.

A parent offers a book and a ball. The child points to the book while Mimo watches.

A story it is!
Let’s read it together.

06

Ooh, what’s on this page?

You point to something in the book.
I lean in for a closer look.

What’s that?A child points into an open book shared with a parent and Mimo.

Now you’ve got me curious!

07

A memory to share.

You show me a photo.
I want to know all about it.
“And then?” I ask. “What happened next?”

A child shares a photo and a feelings card with a parent and Mimo.

Oops, you weren’t finished.
Take your time. I’m listening.

08

Shall we read some more?

This time, it’s my turn to read.
I settle into my chair.
And wait.
And wait.
The book is still closed.

Any moment now…No hurry…Mimo waits in a chair with wings folded and a closed book beside her.

Hmm…
Are you waiting too?

Oh! My turn!Mimo holds an open book and brings a wing to her chest, realising it is her turn.

09

Oops. I waited
a little too long.

I open the book.
Come a little closer.
Let’s read together.

10

Thanks for listening!

Mimo, a child and a parent gather around a picture book.

A sound, a look, a little wave…
You don’t have to use words.

Whatever you want to share,
I’m here to listen.

A note for grown-ups

So many ways
to share.

Mimo loves being with children: copying their sounds, following a pointing finger and sharing a laugh. She is curious about what each child has to say, whether they use words, sounds or gestures.

If you’re wondering when your child will start talking, the wait can feel long. It can help to notice the conversations already happening: a glance your way, a finger pointing something out, a laugh you share. Those moments are worth enjoying in their own right.

Mimo can be so relaxed that she forgets it’s her turn. But beneath that easygoing manner is a quiet belief in the value of connecting, a little at a time. Every small response gives her something to smile about—and something to celebrate with you.
