Does independence mean "being able to do everything alone"?

Today's view of independence isn't "everything alone" but "using needed support and tools to choose and move one's own life forward (self-determination)." In common: everyone lives relying on something. What the family decides: where to draw the line—how much alone, from where to use support—differs by person. A guide: use "are they able to choose for themselves," not just "how much they can do." Living as oneself while relying on others is fine independence too.
