HugMap FAQ
"Removing" vs "Reducing"

How is "eliminating a disability" different from "reducing difficulties in daily life"?

In the WHO ICF way of thinking, difficulties arise from the interaction between the person and the environment. So beyond changing the person, many difficulties can be reduced through the environment, tools, and the understanding of those around. In common: many difficulties can be eased with environmental adjustment and reasonable accommodation. What the family decides: how much to invest in the person-side approach versus the environment-side approach is your choice. A guide: "am I trying to remake the child?" "is there something the environment side can do?" Turning your eyes toward "making life easier" rather than "eliminating" reveals what can be done.
