Crushes, Romance & Relationships

When my child has a crush, how do I teach that "liking someone" and "them liking you back" are different?

First affirm that having a crush is natural and fine, then convey concretely that the other person has feelings too, and they may not be the same. Using the circles of relationships and situation cards, go over the difference between "friend" and "partner," and signs the other dislikes it (not replying, avoiding, saying "stop"). Apply the consent rule here too: ask first before wanting to meet or touch. Practicing in advance how to handle being turned down, and not persisting or following someone around, is important for safety.
