Private Zones
My child undresses or touches their genitals in public. How should I respond?
This is a commonly seen behavior in development and isn't necessarily sexual in intent—reasons can include self-soothing, curiosity, or itch/discomfort. First, without scolding, teach the place where it's okay—"touching your body is something we do in a private place, your own room or the toilet"—without denying the behavior entirely. In public, casually redirect to another activity that uses the hands. If itch, pain, or strong repetition is present, check for skin or urinary discomfort and consult a pediatrician if needed. If there are sudden changes or worrying signs, consult a professional.
