Personal Distance & Circles of Relationships
My child hugs or kisses anyone. How can I teach this?
Don't deny the affection itself; teach that we choose how to show it depending on the person and situation. Using the circles of relationships, decide and practice concrete alternative greetings for each person—"hugs and kisses are for family," "for friends, a high five or a wave." Pair it with the rule of asking "is this okay?" before touching and stopping if the other says no. If suddenly hugging in public keeps happening, give a heads-up beforehand ("today let's wave") and praise it specifically when done—this helps it get replaced.
