Grandparents & Relatives Understanding
When grandparents or relatives don't understand the disability or traits, how can I explain?
Because of differences in values or generation, it may not be understood right away. Rather than trying to get them to understand everything at once, share concrete episodes and easy-to-read materials from professional organizations little by little. Conveying "it's this kind of trait, and it settles when we respond this way," rather than "a troubling behavior," makes cooperation easier to get. Creating moments to celebrate the child's strengths and growth together, when you meet, is also a doorway to understanding.
