HugMap FAQ
Opportunities to Contribute

How can I create experiences where a child with a disability isn't only helped but is useful to someone?

Support tends to become one-way—being done for—but the experience of being useful and contributing leads to confidence and a sense of belonging. Intentionally prepare roles the child can do—handing things out, being in charge of a switch, presenting an area of strength. Increase, at preschool/school and home, situations where they can feel a small "thank you." When help isn't one-way but a relationship where everyone gives and receives, that comes through to the surrounding children too.
