Self-Determination in Disclosure
Who should decide whether the child talks to friends about their disability?
As a rule, who is told—and how much—about the child's own information is for the child (and family) to decide, with the child's wishes increasingly at the center as they grow. There's no right answer to "tell or not," it's okay to choose by person and situation, and it's okay to change one's mind later. If they decide to talk, preparing a short, easy phrasing together brings reassurance. When the school explains to others too, it's important they confirm the child's and family's wishes beforehand. The right not to talk is respected as well.
