What Acceptance Means

What does it mean to "accept" a disability?

There's no set form or goal for acceptance. In common: "accepting" doesn't mean approving of the disability, or not grieving. Many who've been through it describe it as a back-and-forth process—swinging between hopes and reality—of coming to cherish the child as this child. Having days you feel low doesn't mean you haven't accepted it. What the family decides: the way and pace of coming to terms differ by person, and all are valid. There's no need to make "fully accepting it" the goal. Simply layering the days while swaying is itself the walk of acceptance. When it's hard, lean on other parents in the same position or on professionals.
