Waiting vs Doing It for Them

I tend to do things for my child ahead of time. How much do I need to "wait"?

Doing things ahead out of good intentions can cost the child chances to do and tell things themselves. First, deliberately make "waiting time": wait 5–10 seconds after prompting, take a breath and ask "what will you do?" before jumping in. If they seem stuck, don't do it all—ask "want some help?" and support just as much as needed. It's fine to do safety-related things ahead of time; for everything else, base it on "wait, then help a little," respecting the child's pace.
