HugMap FAQ
Reflecting Afterward

After a tantrum settles, is it good to review it with my child?

Reviewing is best done once the child has fully calmed, briefly and without blame. A lecture while excitement remains tends to backfire. Put the feeling into words and accept it—"that was upsetting earlier, wasn't it"—and confirm together just one "next method" (leave the spot, hold up a card). Praise specifically anything they did well in calming down. At ages or stages where understanding is hard, don't force reflection; put the emphasis on adults reviewing the triggers and responses.
