For a child who can't explain how they feel in words, how can I spot when they're unwell?

Unwellness in a child who can't complain in words is noticed from signs that differ from usual. Changes in appetite, sleep, mood, or activity level; touching or guarding a particular spot; expression or complexion; no longer doing what they usually can—these are clues. The better you know their usual state, the more you'll notice changes. When concerned, have them show where it hurts with a picture or doll, and record temperature, toileting, and meals to tell the doctor. Seek care early for sudden strong changes, high fever, or lethargy.
