Morning Routines
In the morning I say, “Get dressed, brush your teeth, and get your bag,” but my child stops partway through. How can I help them move through the routine more independently?
Remembering and carrying out several instructions at once can be demanding. Give one direction at a time. Show “get dressed, brush teeth, get bag” with photos or pictures, and turn over each step when it is finished. On rushed mornings, do not insist that every step be independent; decide which part your child will choose or complete and which part you will help with. Preparing clothes and belongings the night before also reduces the number of morning decisions.
