Meals and Sitting at the Table

My child repeatedly leaves the table during a meal, plays, and then comes back. How can I teach them to sit while eating?

First check whether their feet are supported, the meal is too long, or the timing matches their hunger. Instead of expecting them to remain until every bite is finished, begin with a visible endpoint such as one food or five minutes. If they leave, avoid following them with food; say briefly, “You can continue when you come back.” A consistent signal for the end of the meal and the clean-up routine can also help. Seek clinical advice if you are concerned about frequent coughing or choking, very restricted eating, growth, or weight.
