Expressing Wants and Needs
When my child wants something, they cry before using a word or pointing. How should I respond while they are crying?
Start by keeping everyone safe and acknowledging the message: “You want it.” Do not require a word while your child is overwhelmed. Show the item or a picture and ask, “This?” Treat a clear look, reach, or gesture as an answer. After your child is calm, practise one option they can use next time, such as a “give me” gesture, picture, sign, or word. The goal is not to ignore crying, but to build another reliable way to communicate during calm everyday moments.
