When I ask, “How was your day?” after preschool, my child says, “I don't know.” How can I make it easier to talk about what happened?

Recalling an entire day and answering an open question can be especially difficult when a child is tired. Try later, using a photo or schedule, and ask something specific such as, “Did you play outside or indoors?” or, “Was lunch pasta today?” Do not turn it into a test. Share one small event from your own day and treat a word, expression, or gesture from your child as joining the conversation. Use a communication notebook or another adult-to-adult method for information you need from preschool.
