When my child is absorbed in play, they sometimes do not turn when I call their name from nearby. Should I change how I get their attention?

A child who is deeply engaged may not easily take in a voice. Move into their line of sight, say their name once, and pause. If there is no response, add a cue they can notice, such as a gentle touch on the shoulder or a light tap on the floor, then keep your message short. Calling repeatedly from across the room is usually less clear than making contact once from a reachable position. If your child also rarely responds to voices or everyday sounds in quiet situations, discuss hearing as well as attention at a health check or with your child's clinician.
