My child has a hard time imitating mouth movements or sounds.
In fact, imitating with the mouth (voice) is the hardest kind of imitation and develops last of all. Development proceeds in this order: "imitating big movements (raising arms, clapping) → fine movements → face and mouth movements → voice."
So start with big whole-body imitation play. As that comes along, it gradually connects to imitating the face and mouth, and then sounds. Don't rush the imitation of sounds — nurture it starting from the fun of imitating with the body.
