When should we start fluoride toothpaste, and how much should we use?

Use fluoride toothpaste twice a day from the time the first tooth appears. For children younger than 3 years, use a smear about the size of a grain of rice. From age 3 to 6, use a pea-sized amount. An adult should dispense the toothpaste and help or supervise brushing; encourage the child to spit out excess toothpaste when able. Arrange a dental visit by the first birthday or when advised locally, and ask a dentist or pediatrician for individualized guidance if there are swallowing or dental concerns.
