Eating & Drinking (Feeding)
What if my baby feeds weakly, takes a long time, or tires quickly?
Babies with low muscle tone or medical conditions may have difficulty sustaining a coordinated suck–swallow–breathe pattern. Feed in a well-supported position with the head, neck, and trunk aligned, watch the baby's breathing and stress cues, and allow pauses. Nipple flow and any cheek or jaw support should be selected with a qualified feeding professional rather than changed repeatedly without assessment. Seek prompt advice if feeds are consistently prolonged, intake or weight gain is poor, the baby coughs or chokes, changes color, breathes hard, or becomes very sleepy during feeds. Share any heart or respiratory condition with the feeding team.
