Eating & Drinking (Feeding)

Which foods are choking hazards, and how can I serve food more safely?

Modify round, firm foods for young children: quarter grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthwise, and cut hot dogs or sausages lengthwise into narrow strips rather than round slices. Avoid or modify high-risk foods such as whole nuts, popcorn, and hard, sticky candy according to the child's age and chewing skills. Have the child sit while eating, stay close and attentive, and avoid eating while running, laughing hard, or crying. Caregivers should learn age-appropriate choking first aid from a qualified course.
