What is UDL (Universal Design for Learning)?

Rather than special accommodations for a few children, it's an approach that designs lessons and materials from the start so a diverse range of children can access them (proposed by CAST in the U.S. and spreading internationally). Its three principles are: present information in multiple ways (spoken + written + pictures), allow multiple ways to express oneself (writing, speaking, choosing), and support motivation in diverse ways. Just as a ramp that removes a step is also convenient for people who aren't in wheelchairs, UDL's approaches make learning easier for the whole class. It's a handy piece of vocabulary to know when talking with your child's preschool or school, to propose "a form that helps everyone."
