Working with Daycare & School
What is a calming spot (cool-down space)? Can I request one?
It's the idea of steadying yourself in a quiet place before too much stimulation makes your feelings fall apart — not isolating as a punishment, but a place for the child to regulate themselves. At home, set up a "place that feels calming to be in," like a cardboard house or a tent, and teach that "when you're tired, you can rest here." You can also talk with the childcare setting or school about a similar spot (a partitioned corner of the classroom, the nurse's room, and so on). It works well paired with a way for the child to communicate "I want to rest" (a card or a sign).
