Sensitivity (Sound, Touch, Picky Eating)

My child doesn't want to touch sand, clay, or glue.

Disliking sticky or gritty textures is a response called "tactile defensiveness," and it's not unusual. The palms are especially sensitive, so start with ways that don't involve touching directly — using a spoon or brush as a tool, or squeezing clay through a bag. Set things up so your child wants to reach out on their own, and it's important never to force their hands into the material.
