How does the developmental pace of a child with Down syndrome differ from the general milestone charts?

Children with Down syndrome most often develop slowly, moving through the stages in small steps. Head control, walking, and speech come later than average, but the order is generally the same, and they progress steadily. Rather than being elated or dejected comparing to typical-development milestone charts, we recommend comparing to "this child six months ago."
