HugMap FAQ
Standing & Walking

My child is slow to start walking, or their walk is unusual and they fall easily. Is that okay?

There's a great deal of individual variation (around 10 months to 18 months), so there's no need to worry by comparing with others. Legs turning outward and falling easily when first walking are part of normal development and change as your child grows. Falling, too, is an important experience through which they learn with their body how to shift their weight and where to place their feet. In a safe environment, offer reassuring words like "You're okay—let's try again."
