Fine Motor & Using Tools
My child is clumsy with their hands. Is it just a hand problem?
In many cases, it's not just about the hands. To move the hands skillfully, stability builds from the center of the body (the core) → shoulder → elbow → wrist → fingers, "from proximal to distal"—only once the center is stable can the fingertips move freely. That's why gross motor play like tummy time, crawling on all fours, and supporting body weight on the arms is actually the foundation for fine motor skills. Vision and body awareness (proprioception) are involved too, so look at it from many angles.
