Building Vocabulary
My child has been using the same few words for a while, and I do not think new words are appearing. What can we try in everyday routines?
Along with the number of words, notice whether your child's gestures and understanding are growing, or whether familiar words are being used in more situations. Add short, useful words in the moment: “more” or “finished” at meals, and “there” or “big” outside. Describing what your child is already focused on is often easier to take in than a series of questions. If words your child previously used have decreased, or you are also concerned about understanding and interaction, discuss it at a health check or with a local child-development service.
