My child urinates in the toilet but asks for a diaper to have a bowel movement. How can we move toward the toilet without forcing it?

A diaper may feel secure, and standing may make it easier for your child to push. Accept the request first and check for constipation or pain. Agree on one small next step, such as using the diaper near the bathroom, then in the bathroom, and later sitting with a footstool for support. Do not scold your child or suddenly remove access to diapers. Contact your child's clinician if stools are hard or painful, there is blood, or your child regularly holds bowel movements.
