HugMap FAQ
Sensory Play and Interests

My child stays away when I bring out play dough or paint and does not want to touch it. How can I make the activity easier to join?

Your child may not be interested, or the texture, smell, or feeling of messy hands may be uncomfortable. Watching can count as participation, so begin by playing nearby without asking them to touch. If they approach, offer choices that avoid direct contact, such as pressing through a sealed bag or using a spoon or brush. The goal is not to make direct touching happen. Explore whether watching, using a tool, or touching briefly is the level at which your child can enjoy the activity.
