While waiting in a checkout line or for a sibling's turn, my child cries or leaves the area. How can I make waiting more understandable?

“Wait” does not explain when waiting will end or what your child can do in the meantime. Make the ending visible and concrete: “After this person,” or, “When we count to ten.” Begin with very short waits. A small job, such as holding an item, or a familiar hand game can also help. Notice returning, communicating, and coping—not only the number of seconds waited. When you are out, prioritize safety; leaving the line and trying another day is a valid option.
