HugMap FAQ
Conversation and Answering Questions

My child does not answer when I ask, “What do you want to eat?” or “What did you do at preschool?” How can I make questions easier to answer?

Questions about something that is not currently visible can require a lot of language and memory. Start with real objects or pictures and offer two choices, such as, “Apple or banana?” A point or clear look can count as an answer. For preschool, try a specific choice such as, “Did you play outside or indoors?” Avoid the tired period immediately after coming home, and do not keep questioning when there is no answer. You can simply offer a comment such as, “It rained today,” and leave room for your child to join in.
