HugMap FAQ
Pointing, Gestures & Imitation

It feels like my child has used the same words for a while and isn't adding new ones. What can I try in daily life?

Look not just at the number of words but at whether gestures, comprehension, and the situations in which they use the same words are expanding. At mealtimes, add short words that are useful in that very moment, like "more" or "all done"; outdoors, "ouch" or "big." Rather than piling on questions, narrating what your child is paying attention to is easier for them to take in. If words they used before have decreased, or if comprehension and interaction also concern you, please consult a health checkup or your local support desk.
