HugMap FAQ
Body Foundations (Low Tone, Feet & Shoes)

My child has flat feet and tires easily

The arch of the foot forms around ages 3 to 6. Flat feet at ages 2 to 3 are normal. Playing barefoot, tiptoe games, and toe rock-paper-scissors help the arch develop. Choose shoes with a firm heel counter.
On the other hand, when low muscle tone leads to pronounced flat feet or ankle instability, some hold the view that it's better to make insoles or orthotics early. If walking is unsteady, your child tires quickly, or something concerns you, don't just wait and see—talk with an orthopedist (ideally one who treats children with Down syndrome).
