Standing & Walking
What if my child walks with their knees locked backward?
Knee hyperextension may be related to joint laxity, muscle weakness, balance, or the way the feet and hips are aligned. Do not repeatedly force the knees into position. Play that encourages controlled knee bending—such as supported squats, picking up toys, or supervised step practice—may be useful, but the cause should be assessed if it is frequent, one-sided, painful, or affects walking. A physiotherapist or doctor can advise whether footwear, orthoses, or other support is appropriate.
