Start with real objects, using comparisons where the difference is obvious at a glance (a big heap versus one). When you say "I'll give you the bigger amount" and let them choose, they compare in earnest. Understanding that arrangement changes how it looks (spreading things out makes it look like more) comes later, so for now stick to comparisons that are obvious at a glance.
