When your child can't build from a model

Building while looking at a model requires the ability to compare, which is an advanced task. Start with two or three simple models, and go one piece at a time, confirming as you go: "You put it in the same spot!" Guiding their hands to build together, so they experience the joy of finishing first, also helps.
