HugMap FAQ
Using Tools (Crayons & Scissors)

What if my child cannot open, close, or hold scissors well?

Try spring-assisted or loop scissors that reopen automatically, so your child can focus on closing the handles. Begin with one snip across a narrow strip of paper before progressing to longer lines. Use child-sized scissors in a stable seated position with close adult supervision. A sticker on the thumb hole can provide a visual cue. Gentle hand-over-hand support may be used if welcomed, but prioritize a safe, enjoyable “I cut it!” experience over a perfect grip.
