Imitating a shape right away is hard, so put dots down first and start with "connect the dots." It's also important for an adult to slowly show the process of drawing (not just the finished result). Lines develop in the order of vertical lines, then horizontal lines, then circles, so let them fully enjoy the lines they can draw now.
