What if my child doesn't understand "after doing..."?
Add cues like "and then" or "next" to show the sequence visually. As the step after two-word phrases, work on reason ("because..."), sequence ("once you..."), and contrast ("but...") using picture books about topics your child loves. Familiar, fun examples like "I ate the sushi, but it was spicy" make them easier to take in.
