What if my child can't understand long sentences?

Break a sentence into short pieces and pause between them. Instead of "We're going to the park, so put on your shoes and put on your hat," try "Let's put on your shoes" (once done) "Let's put on your hat." The less information you carry at once, the more reliably it gets through.
