What if my child understands only one part?

Speak slowly, breaking phrases up like "big... ball." Picking up only the first half or only the second half of a sentence is a common stage along the way. Adding a gesture so both pieces of information are also shown visually helps your child gradually learn to process the two elements at the same time.
