HugMap FAQ
Pointing, Gestures, and Imitation

When my child wants something, they take my hand and lead me to it instead of pointing. How can I help them expand the ways they communicate?

Taking your hand is already a meaningful way of saying, “I want to tell you something.” Start by responding and putting the message into words, such as, “You want some juice.” Then add other options to the communication your child already uses: show two real objects or pictures and let them choose, or point yourself and ask, “This one?” There is no need to shape or force your child's finger. Look for gradual growth across gaze, gestures, sounds, pictures, signs, and words.
