Body Foundations (Low Tone, Feet & Shoes)
What should I look for when choosing shoes for a child with low muscle tone?
Choose shoes that fit your child's foot shape and walking pattern and hold the heel securely. Check the fit while your child is standing: there should be roughly 6–10 mm of growing room at the toes, enough width and depth, a firm heel counter, and laces or an adjustable strap that holds the foot without heel slip. High-top shoes may help some children but are not necessary for everyone. Ask a physiotherapist, orthotist, podiatrist, or doctor for individual advice if there is pain, redness, frequent falling, or if your child uses insoles or an orthosis.
